SEN with Judith Brindle (An appreciation of a workshop given for Special Needs)
by Lucinda Geoghegan (from BKA Summer 2002 Newsletter).
What a delight to have Judith Brindle visit us North of the Border! Around thirty people gathered in St Margaret’s Academy to take part in Judith’s wonderful sessions. A few had met or heard of Judith before and therefore knew that sitting down was not an option! Some others however, were completely new and had no idea what to expect! No one was disappointed I can happily say. We were introduced to a wealth of singing games and rhymes and numerous music and movement activities with scarves, balls etc. – all of these activities showing a very definite musical aim. Unfortunately for us the local brass band were rehearsing in St Margaret’s on the same day and some of them walked in on our group of thirty adults dancing with scarves: rumours spread very quickly in West Lothian and some of us are still in hiding!
On a very serious note, Judith’s expertise in her subject is outstanding and her enthusiasm is catching. Many people in the room were non-musicians but Judith managed to give them the confidence to try out a wealth of music activities. Throughout the weekend Judith used very well chosen material to demonstrate the Kodály principles of music education. Equally important however is the fact that Judith clearly demonstrates the power of music in developing the whole child – particularly the child with special educational needs. Nobody could be in any doubt that music education should be at the centre of a child’s education.
From all in West Lothian many, many thanks – we had a wonderful weekend full of fun and full of new ideas. Haste ye back!
